The final episode of It's Okay to Not Be Okay has finally aired and it was very poignant how they wrapped the story of the main characters. It was on point, realistic, heart wrenching, and heartfelt.
They managed to show the guilt that a lot of people feel when it comes to family. How sometimes you are driven to do things for your family because you feel like you owe it to them or because you are making up for a past mistake.
The question is, when does it end? When do yo stop your responsibility to your family and start your responsibility to yourself or to your own family?
Here are a couple of things that I learned from It's Okay Not to Be Okay.
1. You belong to you.
You do not belong to your family, your parents, your partner, or even your kids. You belong to you and your first responsibility is to yourself.
You need to make sure that you are okay, that you are taken cared of, have enough rest, and most of all, happy and at peace with yourself so that you can take better care of others and your own family.
How can you love others when you don't love yourself? How can you teach your kids to love themselves if you don't practice what you preach?
2. Everyone has a story.
People are the way they are because of something that happened in their life. It can be a big thing, it can be a small thing, or it can even be a moment that they are not aware of but there is something that will trigger a person and change them forever, making them act a certain way.
3. People who are broken still deserve to be loved.
There are some people who are too broken and far beyond saving. However, there are people who may be broken but fighting and they are worth loving. The key word here is that they are fighting.
People who are fighting for themselves need all the love and support that they can get.
4. A kiss is better than a fight.
This was something that really got to me. You see, I've always been the person who valued being right more than fixing a relationship. I would pick a fight and really rattle the other person until they cave in.
Watching It's Okay to Not be Okay taught me that it's better to kiss and make up rather than keep fighting with someone you love. If it can be fixed, fix it. Kiss and make up.
5. Count 1, 2, 3 before doing anything impulsive.
This is the one thing that I almost always fail at that I need to really remember. When I get mad, I say things that I don't mean at all. I say it because I know that it will inflict pain.
If I just learn to count 1, 2, 3, then there would be a lot less fights, a lot less pain, and a lot less complications.
If you haven't seen It's Okay to Not Be Okay, you can still catch it on Netflix.
I already watched the first 3 episodes of it. Glad you shared how great this series is.
ReplyDeleteThere used to be a time when I did everything they asked me, but as I grew older, I learned to be more true to myself :)
ReplyDeleteI love counting 1-5 before doing anything impulsive. It is a great lesson. A lot of bad choices can be avoided if one can practice it.
