Cleanance: Solution for Oily Skin

My sister has really oily skin. My brothers too. Even my Mom has oily skin so I grew up hearing about how much of a hassle it it. Thankfully, I don't have oily skin and I rarely get acne but when you are surrounded by people who have it, it becomes your concern too.

This is what happened to me so when I found out that Avene is introducing Cleanance, a solution for oily and acne prone skin. I wanted to help out my sister and brother have clearer skin.

Avène’s Cleanance product line -- with cleansers, moisturizers and more that are specifically developed for the needs of oily and acne-prone skin -- launched Shine-Free Week September 26 – October 2 at SM Makati.

Well-known dermatologist Dr. Karen Gavino-Dionisio of the Aesthetic Institute of the Philippines shared information about good skin cleansing habits and specific products that can help prevent breakouts, arrest excessive oil production and sooth sensitive skin.

All week long, consumers got educated on skin types, the importance of caring for oily skin, the do’s and don’ts of oily skin and what products to use for various skin needs as they went through various stations at the Cleanance booth to enjoy interactive experiences and win prizes.

Dr. Gavino-Dionisio said everyone dreams about having blemish-free skin, so people try different skin care regimens in the hope that they can minimize breakouts. Having sensitive skin compounds skin problems so finding a good skin care routine can be challenging because no one regimen works for everybody. Not just women but also men share the bane of oily, acne-prone skin.

Oily, acne-prone skin, said Dr. Gavino-Dionisio is a concern for 80% of adolescents and 40% of adults. Some of the risk factors of acne are genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, sun exposure, smoking, stress, diet and oily skin.

Sebum, a naturally-occurring substance produced by the body’s sebaceous glands is vital to keep hair and skin lubricated and protected. However, the over-production of sebum can cause various skin problems. Excess oil secretion leads to clogged pores that result in acne.

Dr. Gavino-Dionisio said acne comes in different forms and the appearance and severity of the skin condition differs from one person to another. If untreated, the condition can last for years. But meticulous caring, using the right products and treatment can control this complex skin dilemma. Treatments take an average of two months to work. Patience and perseverance are key.

Cleanance, a French brand that is part of the famous Eau Thermale Avéne line, is the ultimate solution to oily skin for both men and women. It is made especially for acne-prone skin with spots and blackheads because it has gentle and exclusive active ingredients that regulate sebum production without drying the skin and also reduces the appearance of blemishes, said Karihome Philippines Head of Marketing, Anna Karennina Talatala.

During Shine-Free Week, customers had access to Cleanance EXPERT—the full Cleanance line that was introduced at the interactive booths. When used as a team, the products help to carry out the Cleanance Skin Care Routine of Cleanse, Prepare, Reduce Blemishes and Protect.

Cleanance Cleansing Gel jumpstarts the cleansing process. It is soap-free but deeply cleanses the skin while maintaining the surface hydrolipidic film. It has the ability to control sebum production and keep breakouts at bay.

Cleanance Micellar Water can be used next to gently remove impurities from the face and eyes without the need to rinse.

Cleanance Mattifying Lotion, a two toner combination of gentle astringent and mattifying powders can next be used to purify skin and tighten pores without irritation for a clear, shine-free complexion.

Cleanance Skin Refining Serum, a super light, watery texture serum that gives skin a sensation of comfort and freshness without the unwanted stickiness, is also recommended.

To reduce blemishes and dark sports, Cleanance Expert Emulsion helps eliminate mild to moderate blemishes, spots and blackheads while

Cleanance Spot Corrector, a pen that helps reduce the appearance of localized blemishes with daily use, can be used to touch up unwanted spots.

Lastly, there is Cleanance Solaire, which is specifically made for oily, acne-prone skin and gives a matte and shine-free finish that’s perfect for oily skin types. It provides high-sun protection of delicate facial skin with acne.

The Cleanance EXPERT-Complete Care line is formulated for sensitive skin because it has gentle and exclusive active ingredients to regulate sebum production without drying the skin, even as it reduces the appearance of blemishes. It contains  Diolenyl that targets blemishes, X- Pressin that smoothens skin texture, Monolaurin that regulates sebum hyperproduction and Avéne Thermal Spring Water that soothes, softens and prevents skin irritation.

The Cleanance skincare line keeps skin purified, hydrated and mattified day after day.

Mary Kay Philippines

I've been so busy with moving that everything else took a back seat including my skin care. This resulted into breakouts and dry, dull skin. Imagine how happy I was when I scored a skin care haul from Mary Kay.

I've heard so many good things about Mary Kay and I remember having two blush ons from Mary Kay over a decade ago. Those were some of the most used blush pans that I have ever had.

I started using the Mary Kay TimeWise Age Minimize 4 in 1 Cleanser about 10 days ago. It wasn't the type that bubbled up but you can feel it cleaning your face as you use it. It also had some microbeads which helped purify my skin.

My skin felt smoother and softer after a few days and I started having an afterglow.

The Mary Kay Timewise Day Cream SPF30 feels sticky in the beginning but is easily absorbed and does not feel sticky at all. That matters to me because I hate having a sticky face. It just feels icky.

The Mary Kay Honey Glow Finisher is perfect for evenings out or when you just need that healthy glow that makes people think you eat one apple a day which is why you look so good all the time. It gives off a slight shimmer but not too much that one would think you're Edward Cullen out in the sun.

The Mary Kay CC Cream is the perfect blend of correction cream and semi-foundation. It's light enough that you can wear it on a daily basis and heavy enough to cover mild blemishes.

The matte liquid lip color from Mary Kay at Play that I got to try came in two different colors: Offbeat Orchid and Red Alert. My favorite is the Orchid one. They're not transfer proof nor long lasting but they are moisturizing and dries easily. It also smells good.

On the left is Red Alert, on the right side is Offbeat Orchid.

This photo below shows me bare faced. I only have brows on and nothing else yet my skin is glowing.

Mary Kay can be bought from this site.

Review of Hearty Bread

Anywhere you go nowadays, you would see the words KETO, GLUTEN FREE, and the like. Personally, I'm not into these things simply because I love eating and couldn't be bothered to check if my food is keto, gluten free, soy free, halal, or the like.

I was able to try a couple of keto bread and much to my surprise, I actually liked it. I add butter and toast it and it's absolutely divine especially when paired with coffee. I also like the banana loaf plain because it's already tasty enough.

So, why should I or you give keto a chance?

A special type of diet usually arises from a health condition or a call for a healthier lifestyle. Having to adapt to a new diet is hard enough specially if this is accompanied with medicines in the case of those who have diabetes, cancer, renal failures and other diseases that calls for Low-Carbohydrate/ Sugar-Free diet.

The Philippines is considered one of the diabetes “hot spots” in the Western Pacific region. It is estimated that 1 out of 5 Filipinos are diabetic. This statistic is very alarming and calls for attention of the general public. Several cause-oriented group has already started campaigns to spread awareness in the hope to help hinder the growth.

It was noted that unhealthy lifestyle habits of Filipinos is the main cause of diabetes. This was also tackled by World Health Organization and they also included sedentary lifestyles as major lifestyle risk factors, stating that 1 in 3 is overweight and 1 in 10 is obese.
Obesity

Obesity cases is another red flag in the country. Those who consume excess of sugar and carbohydrate lead to accumulating that excess weight overtime. Per record, Philippines has estimated a staggering 18 million citizens who are either Obese or Overweight.

To clarify, consuming sugar does not cause cancer. Studies have been conducted which proves that sugar essentially feeds tumors and encourages cancer growth. Hence, starving these cells from sugar may help cancer patients.

Given these health conditions, a group of young entrepreneurs have decided to develop bread alternatives for those whose dietary requirements needs special attention. Evan Dykimching and Vicson Ngo are the people behind Hearty Bread, Gluten-Free, Sugar-Free.

The company started out as suppliers for some of the major hospitals in the Metro. They cater to doctors and in-house patient with conditions mentioned above. Evan recounts “When one of our family member got confined in the hospital, we were surprised that the price of our bread were quite high due to several administrative fees”

With the company’s desire to promote affordable and quality health, they created the brand “Hearty Bread” to make healthy breads readily available and affordable to the general public.

To give you an idea, if you are not familiar with the price of Gluten-Free/Sugar-Free market, other producers are selling at 500php to 600php per loaf. For most people, this price tag is very expensive.

Hearty Bread invested in research & development for 2 years in order to come up with bread that are double the size and sell them at half the price. Hearty Bread’s Almond Loaf line retails at only 180Php for the plain Almond Loaf while their Cheesy variants – Cheesy Charcoal and Cheesy Coffee are pegged at 250php/loaf.

They also have other products such as their Sourdough/Probiotic line which includes Malunggay Sourdough Pandesal which sells at 40php/6pcs, while their other Sourdough loaf sells at 115php. Hearty Bread’s Fruit loafs are also in demand, Banana Sourdough Loaf retails at 200php, Banofee Walnut Sourdough Loaf and Pumpkin Carrot Sourdough Loaf sells at 280php/ Loaf. These are all Gluten-Free/Sugar-free!

A lot of other products are in the pipeline and are being developed which gives those who are into these type of diet something to look forward to.

Evan also shares the secret to making their bread available at a very low price – “We can really lower the cost of our products since we produce them commercially in volume quantities. We also own the lot where our facilities operate so we don't pay rent.”  He further explains “We make our bread affordable not to kill the market price but to make these healthy bread affordable and help those who are burdened to begin with.

BPI & Kidzania teaches Kids about Money

I have a teenager and one of the things that I want him to learn is how to handle his money. He gets an allowance from me for lunch and I make sure that I give him an extra. I've taught him that he needs to put away 20% of what he gets from me. I'm really hoping that he learns to save.

A few weeks ago, his cousin was able to attend an event sponsored by Kidzania and BPI where his cousin learned what it's like to "work" and earn money.

Researchers and educators across the world have proven that play-based learning is crucial on children’s intellectual growth and development. For the known ardent advocate of financial literacy for kids, BPI Family Savings Bank (BFSB), providing children with active and playful hands-on experience is crucial in instilling financial responsibility.

This drove the Bank to further its financial literacy efforts and tap theme park KidZania, where both would form a learning environment to prepare children for the challenges and demands of the future. Since 2016, over 800,000 children have learned the basics of banking and financial responsibility through this partnership.

KidZania is an indoor city run by kids, where they can earn and spend kidZos, or KidZania’s currency, when taking part in activities, as in the real world. Children can fill over a hundred roles across 65 establishments, where they can work for companies in various industries such as publishing or pharmaceutical, or pay for services rendered in a beauty salon or training in a school.

Financially savvy kids

“Ultimately, they gain financial awareness as they have the liberty to manage their own kidZos—from budgeting to spending and saving,” Go said. “Kids learn that they can earn money by being productive and useful, that they can use the money for their needs and wants, and that they can save money for their future, to achieve bigger dreams.”

Go said this is all part of BPI’s vision of “Building a Better Philippines”, where every Filipino has access to financial services and possesses practical knowledge about saving and investing.

Inside KidZania, there is a special BPI branch where kids are given special accounts and ATM cards for their kidZos, the currency used in the theme park. Their savings gain interest over time, which the kids can spend in their next visits. BPI is the exclusive bank partner of KidZania.

Reinforcing financial literacy

Go said an example of a very useful product for kids is the Jumpstart savings account which is available through BPI and BFSB. Jumpstart is for children aged 10 to 17 years old and requires only a minimum deposit of P100. A portion of the funds can be protected from unplanned withdrawals, and parents can easily transfer money to the account for allowances. The Jumpstart Debit Card can also be used for cellphone reloading.

“People can rest assured that BPI will continue to educate and make saving easy for this generation. Through our partnership with KidZania and our other financial education programs, we hope to make lives better for a lot of our fellow Filipinos,” Go said.

Snack Review Oishi + Breadstix

One of the things that I am guilty of is loving junk food and biscuits. When there's a new flavor, I get all excited and I try to make sure that I get to try it myself so when I saw that there was a new Breadstix and Oishi Prawn Crackers flavor, I knew that I had to give it a whirl.

The Salted Egg flavor of Oishi Prawn Crackers is just right. It's not over the top and I easily got halfway to the bag without feeling overwhelmed.

The Bread Stix Garlic Parmesan is perfect for when you're eating pasta and have run out of garlic bread or just want to enjoy an Italian merienda but want to stay low key on a budget.

These snacks are available in all supermarkets and are definitely budget friendly. Definitely recommending this but consume in small doses.

Da Gianni Cucina Italiana

A meal that will remind you of home.

This is the promise of Da Gianni Cucina Italiana. A passion project put up by a family that has no culinary background save for a good family meal, Da Gianni promises a meal that will remind you of home which is something that everyone craves for.

M and I were able to try a few of their dishes and here are our favorites.

The ultimate dish that anyone who dines at Da Gianni should order is the Wild Mushroom Pastry Puff. This dish is just crazy delicious. It had different kinds of mushrooms and cheese and the combination of it all is just simply mouth watering.

The lamb chops were also great. The mint cheese spread that goes with it complements the entire dish. It was cooked well and had no bitter aftertaste that other lamb chops seem to come with.

The beef pesto pizza was another definite win. Best eaten with your hands, this is the kind of greasy goodness that you will constantly crave for.

There are more choices to choose from, each a star on it's own. They also have fish and chips that are definitely worth your buck and they have a truffle pasta that will just smack you in the face with it's taste.

For meat lovers, their short ribs and bone marrow will surely give you the heart attack you want to avoid so proceed with caution.

Da Gianni is definitely a restaurant that I would go back to. In fact, M and I are already planning on when we can bring B to this place because he would definitely love the pizza and pasta as much as we did.

Bon appetit.

Wagyuniku in BFRV, Las Pinas

A new restaurant recently opened near our place and M has been itching to try it out. Personally, I wasn't interested because the concept was just another Japanese and Korean BBQ. However, M really wanted to try it so after we had the 5th month check up, we went ahead and finally gave it a go.

Photo from FB Page
Wagyuniku is supposedly a Japanese and Korean BBQ place but when you step inside, it can become a little bit confusing. You see, the entire place is decked in Japanese lanterns and had gaudy Japanese wallpaper art.

They did have really nice smoke preventors per table so there was no smoke inside even when everyone was grilling to their hearts content. The chairs were not so comfy for someone like me because after sitting for an hour, I could feel it pressing against my thighs and I have thick thighs.

Food wise, it was more Korean than Japanese. The only Japanese thing about the food selection was the wagyu meat and the miso soup as far as I can remember. Everything else is what you'd expect at a Korean restaurant.

The food itself was okay. There was nothing outstanding save for the Kani Salad and the Ebi Mushroom. I think I had over 10 small bowls of the kani salad. I wished they added more kani though because there was one tiny strip of kani per bowl but the dressing they used was what hooked me in.

The wagyu was not okay with my Mom. For me, it was pretty okay. The wagyuniku chicken wings was pretty good but it's best paired with beer which I couldn't have.

The highlight, and yes feel the sarcasm, was the LIVE performer who was anything but LIVEly. In fact, my Mom actually thought it was a bad recording and almost asked for the channel to be changed. I had to immediately step in and tell her that they had a live performer, not a bad channel.

The confusion lies in the fact that this was supposedly a Japanese and Korean BBQ place but the live performer kept singing in a really sad way, Filipino songs like SA ILALIM NG BUWAN. I mean, how are you supposed to feel being given a pseudo Japanese ambiance, a Korean BBQ place, and then you have someone crooning in the most emo way possible a Tagalog ballad meant.

It was the epitome of confusion.

I wish the owners of Wagyuniku can finally come to a decision.

Are you a Korean place?
Are you a Japanese place?
If you are a fusion of the two, please at least add california maki to the menu.
If you are Korean Japanese, please make the performer LIVELY, PERKY, and make him stop singing emo Tagalog songs.

Would I recommend this place? I'd say there's no harm in giving it a try.
Would we come back here? As my Mom put it, if there's really nothing else to try anymore.

5th Month Pregnancy Check Up

In the middle of looking for a new place and finally moving in, the 4th month pregnancy check up ended up falling in between cracks.

Thankfully, the 5th month checkup finally happened and we now have an update on our little baby that's growing inside my tummy.

I've been worried because I was told that the pulse was weak by someone and that I needed to rest more. You see, the move has been really brutal and I've been helping out. This means that I've been lifting things, stressing myself, tiring myself, and not sleeping well.

I was worried.

Thankfully, the new doctor was very efficient and immediately checked the baby. We found out that our baby is now 7inches long, 20 weeks, and has a normal heartbeat.

Yes, we heard the heartbeat for the first time yesterday and it was so reassuring. M actually had tears in his eyes. On my end, I was just really happy to hear that the baby is okay.

After the check up, we had dinner and that is another story to tell.

on chaos and madness + life's little comforts

We recently moved house. In fact, it's been a few weeks since we moved house and it was only today that I actually got to sit down and find the perfect spot for me to work.

It's been crazy.

Scratch that. It's been chaotic. It's been pure madness. It's been an out of this world moving phase.

We crammed moving from a bigger house to a smaller space in a matter of 7 days. Yes, you read that right, 7 days.

The new house looks bigger but in reality it's actually smaller. The terrace and the garden are what makes up most of the lot and the rest of the rooms are barely enough. It seems the owner who built this place was more of an outdoor person rather than someone who loves staying in.

This is the view from our room. It has the feels of Baguio because of the pine tree and when I look up from the bed, I don't see the electric wires or the other houses. All I see is the blue sky and the pine trees.

We also had all our sofa, dining chairs, and mattresses deep cleaned and shampoo'd by Clean X Manila South. This was another good spend because the sofa and dining chairs have become dirty due to little kids who had dirty feet putting up their feet, sweaty humans, dust and dirt, as well as cat hair that has accumulated over the years.

I'd recommend doing this 2x a year to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of your home.

The other investment that we have for this new home is the water heater with rainshower head. I easily get cold and this was just a dream come true. Every time I shower, it feels like I'm in a hotel.

This is part of the garden. My Mom and my sister are the ones who really like to garden but I am starting to appreciate it.

I'd never actually garden but I can definitely buy more plants and help make this luscious and thriving. I just can't ever dig deep into the soil. That's just not me plus I'd scream bloody murder if a worm or snail goes near me.

Here's the new home of our babies. Three of them is mine and the other three belongs to M. We separated them so that there's a female dorm and a male dorm though most of them have been spayed save for the babies and the really old one. This way, they won't procreate anymore and will stay off the streets.

This is where we watch TV, study, and work. It's actually a bar area but since we don't really drink, it has become an entertainment spot where M shoots products for me. It's very relaxing.

Here is my family. Amidst all the chaos and madness, here are the people who give me comfort and remind me that everything will be okay and that at the end of the day, they are the people that I can call home.
