Museo Pambata Receives PHP 2M from Mayor Isko Moreno

Last July 14, Ms. Bambi Manosa-Tanjutco, President of Museo Pambata, and Ms. Maricel Montero, Executive Director of Museo Pambata received the check for Mayor Isko Moreno’s Sailun Tires talent fee from Mr. Ruben Tan, President of Sailun Tires Philippines and Mr. Jameson Ong, Vice President of Sailun Tires Philippines. This donation will help fund Museo Pambata’s Project “Bakuran”.

It is a new open space that is conceptualized to create awareness and connection among visitors on the importance of nature and the environment to our lives. Space will feature trees and plant species endemic to the Philippines. It will show the value of plants as food and as medicine and how anyone in an urban setting can grow plants and vegetables as a solution to food security.

“We are grateful for Mayor Isko's contribution and the fact that he supports Museo Pambata's mission. By opening the “Bakuran”, we will be able to encourage nature-friendly activities that children and families would love. Outdoor play is very important as safety is a priority during this pandemic. We want Museo Pambata to be an outdoor classroom and an alternative learning environment for them'', says Ms. Bambi Manosa-Tanjutco.

The “Bakuran” will also be opening soon for venue rental for birthday parties, small family gatherings, shoots, prenup pictorials, and day of play for small groups as part of the Museo Pambata’s fundraising efforts.

Mayor Isko Moreno took a tour of the Museo Pambata last June 24, during Manila day, and pledged to help the people behind it after seeing its new Bahay Pukyutan Playground. 

5 Apartment Hunting Tips in Chicago You Need to Know

Looking for the perfect place to live can be daunting, even in Chicago. Finding the one that has the right bedroom space, kitchen space, living room area, storage, basement, bathroom, or even the eternal whether you should have a porch or balcony can drive any sane person crazy.

As much as we want to rely on reports sent out by cities and local places, it’s still best to check with the people who have actually lived in that area for quite some time if it’s a good place to live in. Knowing the crime rate and checking to see if your neighbors are the friendly and normal kind is very important because these are the people you will be mingling with for quite some time, if not for the rest of your life.

Moving in the Middle of the Pandemic, Again

Last year, we moved out of the house we were living in in the middle of the pandemic. I thought we were crazy but we really had no choice. Thankfully, we survived it and I thought that we would be staying in that house till we move on to better things.  

I thought wrong. 

Apparently, a year later, we would need to move out again because the house we moved into was not well maintained. The ceiling opened up during heavy rainfall and flooded the inside of our home. It was GHASTLY, TRAUMATIC, and just plain BAD. 

The worst part? The owner was not even apologetic. Talk about rude. In all the times I told him how horrible the flooding inside the house was, the 6 hours clean up, the roaches, the mud, and what not, he never said sorry about what happened. 

It was really appalling. 

So, we started the quest of finding a new home but this time, we were racing against the next typhoon and this was hard because it's typhoon season right now in the Philippines. We saw 2 houses both of which were ghastly and overpriced. Thankfully, third time's the charm and we found a new place not far from where we live right now. 

It's 3 floors, smaller, cheaper, but most important, far more pleasant and welcoming than the last one. I did have to let go of a lot of my stuff but these were things that I didn't actually need anymore so it's a good thing. I gave it away to people who needed it so it was a good thing. 

As you can see, the dining and living room are now in the same area and it flows from one  point to the next. I love that now, there are no more walls in between the area where we eat to the area where we relax. 

I also love that this place has an attic. 

I turned it into my office, storage area, and display area for our books and toys. 

It was stressful, having to move everything within 3 days. The last time, we had 5 days and this time around, we had 3 days to beat the incoming typhoon. It was also very costly. Truth be told, the landlord of our former house should have shouldered this but he was obviously someone who didn't know right from wrong and just wanted money. 

I'm just glad we got out of that house and we're safely ensconed in this new one. I hope that this place is where we'll be staying till we move to better things.

Linggo Ng Musikang Pilipino 2021 goes digital with diverse and inclusive programming

Linggo Ng Musikang Pilipino (LMP) marks its second digital edition this year with a commitment to promoting awareness and appreciation of OPM artists from all over the world through multiple social media platforms.

The weeklong celebration promises a wide variety of music programs that not only cater to a specific format, but also encompass concerts and gigs, open mic challenges, exclusive premieres, workshops, and a lecture series. 

The series of virtual events will run from July 23 to August 1 and will be streamed live via Facebook and KUMU.

Aside from a diverse set of homegrown talents performing online, LMP also partners with key and emerging stakeholders in the music industry such as AmiananPop, MinPop, Kadasig & Artist Ko, Soupstar Music, and Warner Music Philippines to ensure that artists with different backgrounds, and from different regions, are given equal opportunities to perform and engage with the community. 

As Christian Bautista puts it, “We wanted there to be a balance between independent artists and mainstream/signed artists from all over the country and to try to cover as many styles and genres as possible. OPM already has a large roster of artists and we wanted to be able to feature as many as we can from the organization. We took into consideration their music and styles as well as the platforms that they are active in for the artists performing the LMP DigiGigs.”

Aside from the music shows and online concerts featuring the roster of PhilPop’s past champions and finalists, LMP is partnering with PETA for a special online showcase featuring the songs from Rak Of Aegis, as well as songwriting and learning opportunities that are spearheaded by the institution’s other partners, FILSCAP and PhilPop.

Even as the music industry is struggling to get back to its former glory and a lot of plans are derailed by the pandemic, LMP refuses to back down in its efforts to persevere and push through with mounting an online celebration that champions Filipino musicians not just from Metro Manila, but also from other parts of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, and the rest of the globe.

Hence, the tagline ‘Ituloy Ang Awitan’ was formed. In the words of LMP Project Manager Gab Cabangon, it was developed as part of a “desire to just challenge the situation that we are in.” He explains, “We wanted to highlight how Filipino Music is here to stay and will continue to be a part of our lives and a sense of hope despite the challenges in these trying times. The creation and support of Filipino music should never stop because our songs are able to reflect the story and the culture of the Filipino people.”

OPM Icon and OPM Board Member Noel Cabangon maintains that nothing can stop this important milestone in the history of Philippine music from happening. He reaffirms, “In an ideal situation, we would have wanted to have live shows and concerts so that fans of Filipino Music will get to have that real-life concert experience once again. But of course, there are a lot of considerations that we have to make. Our priority is to mount this festival safely and responsibly for everyone. For the time being, the social media platforms are a suitable alternative to allow artists to perform without the health risks brought about by the pandemic.”

Organized and produced by Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit (OPM) and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), LMP has been around since 2014, and has established itself as the premiere annual music festival of Filipino music. 

This year’s edition will be headlined by some of the biggest and most promising artists in local music such as Noel Cabangon, Christian Bautista, Sandwich, 6cyclemind, Gracenote, Bayang Barrios, Cookie Chua, PhilPop Grand Champions reon and Chud Festejo, Miss Ramonne, artists from Warner Music Philippines like Ferdinand Aragon and Y ARA, and many many more!

Review of Baker J in Crimson Hotel Alabang

I recently learned that Crimson Hotel in Alabang recently opened a cafe located on the ground floor of the hotel. Since my brother and I are now fully vaccinated, I felt a little bit brave venturing out.  I told my brother that I wanted to visit the place but we both agreed that should there be a lot of people, we would turn around and go home. 

Luckily, we got there at a dead hour and so there was only one other table that was occupied. 

First impression: cafe with luxury feels. I LOVED IT. I love bakeries or cafes that give off this kind of vibe because a small part of me can pretend that I'm in another country, having a cup of hot coffee and eating delicious pastries. 

Baker J gives you just that feeling or vibe. 

My brother and I were seated and given a QR code to scan for the menu. I loved this since it was a contactless way of scanning a menu and we didn't have to touch a physical one. When we saw the menu, we knew that we were in for a treat because it offered food just like the ones in a legit Parisian cafe / bakery. 

We started with bread. This was complimentary and I loved the packaging that it came in. Very chic. I also wanted to take home the ceramic jar that housed the cutlery but had to restrain myself haha. It was just so pretty. I don't know about you but little details like this matter to me because it adds to the overall effect and impression of the place. 

This is the Champignon Tartine with is an open faced mushroom sandwich. I super loved this one because I am a mushroom lover. I don't know about you but there's something soothing about mushrooms and whenever I eat one, I feel healthier. Maybe it's just me but that's how this Champignon Tartine was to me. Healthy food on top of a sandwich. 

We also had the Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict with Hollandaise Sauce. My brother loved this, I only liked it coz it's pretty haha. For me, it was a little bit too tangy but my brother said that this was absolutely perfect. 

This is the complet which is the complete breakfast set that anyone who wants to stuff himself silly should order. It has everything and when I say everything, it has EVERYTHING. As you can see, it has bacon, eggs, sausage, mushroom, fruits, and waffles. It even has a side salad. 

These are just appetizers and it was all very filling. Then came the main course. The salmon was absolutely perfect. It was cooked perfectly that I ended up eating everything off the plate. I also loved that the slab of salmon was big enough to be filling.

The steak, on the other hand, would be perfect for any meat lover. Cooked the way you want from rare to medium-well, this is the kind of steak you have on a Friday night or the weekend when you just want to celebrate. 

Overall, I would definitely recommend hanging out at Baker J in Crimson Hotel Alabang. It's chic and definitely a place worthy of more than a visit. 

Some of the other must-tries from the new menu is Chef Nicolas’ take on the classic French dish Coq Au Vin from Burgundy, which beautifully showcases the exceptional wines of the famous wine region; rich yet light Quiche Lorraine from the region of the same name; Baker J’s signature Confit de Canard made with duck confit croquettes and served with green lentils and mizuna leaves in balsamic vinaigrette; the healthy but satisfying Pan-Seared Salmon Steak with Ratatouille; and of course, what would a visit to a French café be without the ever-favorite French breakfast Tartines, which includes the Salmon Tartine with Avocado and Goat’s Cheese and the brunch-perfect traditional Croque Monsieur with Grùyere.

5 Reasons Why you need to Celebrate at Okada Manila

We all deserve a break and we all deserve to celebrate life and all the milestones that we go through. I firmly believe in this which is why I decided to celebrate my husband's birthday at Okada Manila. It was quite fortunate that they were already receiving guests already when I booked with them. 

1. Luxury Feels

Soon as we entered the hotel, I knew that I made the right choice. I ended up on the VIP concierge and when I realized my mistake, I asked where the regular guest registration was. I was told that every guest was a VIP and so I was in the right place. The front desk also made sure that I was accompanied by a staff to ensure that I won't get lost inside the hotel because it is pretty massive. 

When I entered the room, I was blown away. The Junior Suite was massive. Okada Manila definitely did not scrimp up on floor space and you could feel luxury in every step that you take inside the room. 

From the king-sized bed (or bigger) to the spacious workspace, the jacuzzi in the middle of the bathroom, and the entertainment area, everything spoke of affluence. 

2. The Jacuzzi in the Junior Suite Room

My husband enjoyed the jacuzzi. In fact, he used it twice because it was really soothing to his back pains and because for the first time, he found a jacuzzi where he could comfortably sit and stretch his legs fully. This was definitely a plus because some jacuzzi can be limiting and not meant for people who are taller or bigger. 

I was also amazed at how everything was handled through a tablet. When I say everything, I meant everything from the lights, sounds, drapes, ordering of food, booking a massage, and watching TV. It was so amazing and such an experience. 

This little tablet was the brains of the entire suite. There are also two inside so there's no need to share. One of you can use it to channel surf (such a unique way of doing it) while the other one can order food or set the mood with the lights. 

3. Attention to Detail

I loved the little surprises that they had for my husband. I didn't ask them to prepare any of these and they did it themselves. Talk about superb customer service. No wonder they are a Forbes Five Star Hotel. The attention to detail is amazing.

We had a welcome cake soon as we arrived and then the husband was sent another one when we ordered room service in the middle of the night. Truly a happy birthday indeed!

We had a quick dinner at Kiapo where we tried out their heavenly sisig. Absolutely no regrets with this one as it was simply good. 

4. The Retreat Spa

We then rested for 2 hours and then it was off to The Retreat Spa. We booked a Bespoke Massage because we wanted certain parts of our body to be the main focus of the massage.

For me, it was my upper back and legs while for the husband, he needed focus on his lower back. 

Soon as you enter, you won't have to worry about other people because they have pods to keep you separated from other people. Here, they will serve you tea and some nuts while you wait. 

They also have a steam bath that you can avail yourself before your massage. This is good because it will help prep your body for the massage. They have robes that have been sanitized, hotel slippers, and even disposable underwear for you to wear. 

You also have your own private bathroom when you book the couples massage which is really great. You have your own cabinet, hair dryer, and sink where you can freshen up before you avail of your massage. 

We haven't started the massage at this point but the husband and I were already relaxed. The steam room was so relaxing and I could feel all my muscles loosening. 

When we got inside the massage room, there was another surprise. This time, I was just blown away by how thoughtful the staff was. They had a Happy Birthday banner for the husband and dried roses to celebrate our recent wedding. 

What a service! 

As you can see, the couples massage room was spacious. I really love how big the spaces are because it shows that Okada Manila prioritizes the comfort of its guests and makes sure that there is always more than enough space to move around. 

The Bespoke Massage that we had was PURE HEAVEN. If I were to rate all the massages that I have had and I've had a lot, this would be number one on my list. 

The masseuse had a soothing voice. She was not intrusive. They did not chitchat. She adjusted the strength of her massage according to my needs. Even with gloves on (safety first of course), she managed to make the massage feel like she wasn't wearing one. 

I felt so relaxed that my mind literally went blank and this is very hard for me to do. This time around, it was just so smooth and just truly relaxing. Truth be told, it's even better than the massages that I've had where I paid 5 figures. 

All my sore muscles from my neck down to my arms, my back, and my legs felt like it was loosened. It was just really a spa retreat. The music was just right, the mood light was perfect. 

It was HEAVEN. I would totally go back and avail of this again and again. It is a definite investment for one's body and one's mental health. 

After the massage, they once again served us tea and even had dried fruits to refresh ourselves with. They also gave us foot patches to help get rid of the toxins in our bodies. I am telling you, the husband and I slept for at least 8 hours straight, something that we have not experienced in almost 2 years. 

It was truly the stuff of dreams. 

5. Impeccable Service

When I tell you that a certain hotel or restaurant or staff has impeccable service, believe me. I used to handle customer service and I grew up with a family who is in the hotel industry so I know what impeccable service is and Okada Manila has this from the guard, bellboy, wait staff, massage therapists, and right down to their phone operators. 

It wasn't just the guest relations people. It was EVERYONE. EVERY SINGLE PERSON that worked for Okada Manila that I encountered on my overnight stay provided me with wonderful service. 

Mind blown. I was just so amazed. Seriously. 

It was in the small details such as ensuring that when I am transferred from one department to another, they made sure that there was someone on the other line to reminding us when we forgot our face shield. When we had requests, they handle it very well and I didn't have to make a 2nd follow up. 

When then was a minor mishap on the eggs I ordered for breakfast, they immediately corrected it even when I said that there was no need. It was just so amazing. 

When you pay for a staycation, you are paying for peace of mind, being taken care of, and having your needs met. Okada Manila delivered on all of these. 

I felt so pampered and taken care of. I truly felt that I was on vacation which is how it should be. This is money well spent if I may say so.
