Life on Mars in the eyes of a Child

Life on Mars

When I was a kid, I have always wondered what it would be like to live in another planet? When I grew up and I started watching movies where aliens eat people and invade Earth, I lost the curiosity. Blame it on Hollywood but I thought, it's better to just stay on Earth and be the only specie existing.

This all changed when I saw the preview of MARS on NAT GEO. It made me believe once again in the possibility that we could live on MARS or more probable is that my son could live on MARS.

Bridging the space between science and science fiction, MARS tells the story of mankind’s thrilling quest to colonize the Red Planet. This global television event redefines on-air storytelling by combining film-quality scripted drama and visual effects with a powerful documentary interviewing some of the best and brightest minds in modern science and innovation, including Elon Musk.

The scripted portion of MARS follows a crew of six fictitious astronauts in the year 2033 as they travel to Mars aboard the spacecraft Daedalus – Earth’s first-ever crewed mission to the Red Planet. When the uniquely qualified Daedalus crew arrive on Mars, they explore astounding wonders and grapple with unexpected challenges as they work to set up humanity’s first colony on the Distant Planet.

MARS also showcases an unprecedented collection of interviews with the world’s leading scientific minds. As the fictional story of the Daedalus crew unfolds, television audiences will hear real interviews with some of the most fascinating people on Earth, including astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson; business magnate and inventor Elon Musk; Andy Weir, author of The Martian (adapted into an Oscar-nominated film starring Matt Damon);  and former NASA astronauts Charles Bolden, John Grunsfeld and James Lovell.

The show’s stars include South Korean-born singer, composer, and multimedia artist JiHAE, playing Mission Pilot Hana Seung; and Ben Cotton, known for sci-fi productions ranging from Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome to The Chronicles of Riddick, who takes on the role of American Mission Commander Ben Sawyer.

Due to my fascination, I started to wonder if my son would actually be interested in living on Mars and coz we had time, I decided to do a vlog of him and his answers. It was actually very interesting hearing the thoughts of an 11 year old child about life on MARS.

no more appearances

Me: Do you ever think of me? Do you remember me when you're busy?
Him: You make regular guest appearances in my head.

This was around 1.5 months ago.

It has been 3 days now that I have not heard from him. I don't know what I said wrong or what happened but he just stopped replying to my message. I knew that he was losing interest but I thought it was just me being my paranoid self. Apparently, I was spot on.

Heartache

It really shouldn't matter you know. Seriously, it shouldn't. Sino ba sya? He's just some guy I went out with 3x. Why should he matter? So what if he and I talked endlessly for almost 2 months. I'm not a stapler. I shouldn't get easily attached.

But I do.

And it hurts ... a lot.

I'll get over this. I know that much about myself by now. It just hurts though because ...

I really should just stop caring. I don't understand people who keep saying that we should continue to love and care like we have never been hurt before because seriously, how can you continuously put yourself out there?

I don't understand why guys that I like just seem to go away.

Really, it's not. All I wanted is to just have someone to go to at the end of the day and talk with. All I want is to have someone who I can have fun with and hang out with. All I want is to have someone to share my life with and it seems, there is no one.

I really should just stop. It's over for me. It really is over for me and love.

no longer serving coffee ...

A few days ago, I finally told you about my state of health and one of the things that I even compared me to was a coffee shop. I realize now that my brain really knows better than my heart. I’ve come to see that I am indeed your very own coffee shop.

Coffee shops are places we go to in the morning or at night. This is where we do our good mornings or where we say, what a day! It’s a comfort zone. This is where we spill thought vomits or share ideas which we may need help on. Coffee shops are awesome but we only really remember them when we have nothing else to do or when we need them. In between, they are parked away without a thought thrown in their direction.

In this sense, I am a coffee shop to you. Initially, I was something exciting, like when you discover a new place. You couldn’t wait to see me or hang out here. In fact, you managed to hang out in this place 3x amidst your busy schedule. You made time. I felt important.

However, as with anything, when the excitement wore off, you’ve stopped trying to see me. I have become just another coffee shop to you. We are a dime a dozen but you still go here daily simply because you got used to it. You message me and talk to me but it’s more out of habit rather than anything else. After all, we have been chatting daily for almost 2 months now. Habit is formed when you do something for several days.

I am just a habit now. I am not anything special. I mean, yes you like me but that's about it. You just like me. You.Just.Like.Me.

This should have been okay. It should have been. After all, we went out on 3 dates. THREE DATES. So what if we chatted daily from morning till night for one month straight? THREE DATES. So what if we have made it a point to talk to each other and be each other’s thought dumping sites for the next month. THREE DATES. It doesn’t mean anything. IT WAS JUST THREE DATES. Regardless if we had talked to each other daily for two months it was just three dates.

It means nothing right?

WRONG.

Apparently, I am a stapler. I get easily attached and I have become attached to you. While you simply saw me as a comfort zone, I have started seeing you in a different manner, one that you do not share. I’m not as dense as you think I am. Whenever I try to say something that hints of my feelings,  you send me a freakin smiley. A SMILEY. Gah!

Thankfully, I am a little bit smarter now and I have come to realize that I am falling again for someone who is not going to fall for me. It’s not your fault. I don’t blame you. There are so many reasons why you’re not. Again:

1.       You barely know me.
2.       THREE DATES.
3.       You don’t really have time to get to know me.
4.       You don’t have time to even assess what we are.
5.       You just came out of two broken relationships. Sometimes I feel envious that for her, you booked a plane ride just to have dinner and I can't even have one with you in the last month when we are in the same city. This is the part where logical me says "he's just not that into you."
6.       You are still broken and hopefully healing for your own sake.
7.       You just don’t see me that way.
8.       I was just someone convenient if we will be utterly honest.

So there. Now that we have established that, I would like to say thank you …

1.       For making me laugh
2.       For making me feel special
3.       For being there when I needed someone
4.       For calling me out when I am petulant
5.       For calling me out when I feel insecure
6.       For not giving me false hope

I would also like to say goodbye for now. I need to do this for myself before I fall for you 100% and have my heart broken because you won’t be there to catch me. Contrary to popular belief that I will simply bounce when I fall, I won’t. If I fall for you and it looks like I will at the rate I am going and judging on how my heart flutters like crazy whenever you message (the few times in a day that you actually remember me) and you don’t fall as well (it’s fairly obvious you won’t and it’s cool - - - okay it’s not cool but I gotta think it is) then I’m in for some serious heartache.

I can’t make you love me if you don’t. I won’t force myself on you as well. I’ve learned to love myself enough to never do that again. So I’m gonna step back and get myself all sorted out. I need to.

Distansyang Sapat - - - I wrote this poem when I initially realized that I liked you more than I should and you didn’t like me more than you should. Distansya muna ako because I need to, because it is what my heart needs and when I’m okay again, when I no longer feel things for you that I shouldn’t, perhaps I’ll say hi and we can be friends again. Or perhaps I’ll just cherish the memories and moments we had and pray that this 2017, you find the healing that you need and you find that girl who will make you believe in love again because it’s obviously not me.

It’s not me and it hurts and this is why I need to step away. Goodbye sweets. It was good while it lasted but I think it’s best we leave what we are behind in 2016 because what we are is confusing and is now starting to hurt me. I wish you well. It’s just sad that it wasn’t me. I could have made you forget all about the pain you have in your heart but I guess it’s not for me to do but for someone else.

I hope you find her soon. For now, this coffee shop now no longer serves coffee. Perhaps it never will again.

Go to Gift: Starbucks Mug and Tumblers

Sometimes, we just have that one person in our life who has everything. He can buy what he wants, he has collected everything in his collection, and he doesn't want anything new. For people like me, who is a bit artsy, I'd almost always end up creating something from hand for these kind of friends but sometimes, like this year, I just have no time. What to do then?

Well, this is actually where I go and grab my go to gift: the Starbucks mugs and tumblers. Why is that? It's actually pretty simple. Starbucks mugs are always worthy of being gifted and the tumblers can easily be carried around and whipped out to use without feeling embarrassed because the design is really chic.

Are they not pretty? Now these designs are from past collections but I just wanted to reiterate how pretty they are which is why I showed it here. For the latest collection, you can actually head over to your nearest Starbucks store and buy it. It's not pricey and it's quite impressive to hand over one of those brown paperbags with the siren's logo to your boss or friend who has it all. After all, it is Starbucks.

loving the broken parts of you ....

Why are you happy that I like you?
Aren't we too old to be infatuated?

I think in a way we don't know much about each other in the sense that I have no idea what ticks you or what your favorites are but we know parts of each other that other people could never know and I think its beautiful. We know the ugly side of one another and yet we haven't thrown in the towel and said fuck this, you're psycho. There is beauty in liking the ugly side of someone. It makes for a better foundation for whatever will start because it is NOT infatuation coz how can you be infatuated with something that is not beautiful?

I wrote this a month or so ago when we just started seeing each other. A month has passed and we haven't seen each other anymore but we have stayed in touch and you have managed one way or another to be there for me virtually. You remind me when I'm being petulant to act like the grown up that I am supposed to be and you cheer me on when haters get to me.

The other day I told you:

We are each others casualty in the luck
that life has thrown at us
for we will always choose other priorities
over the feelings we have for each other.

I think that if we really look at it, we are not jumping in the pool of togetherness because although we may have healed, we are not fully healed and we have a lot of things we still want to prove to the world and to ourselves. In a lot of ways, we are still broken and we are still putting together the many pieces of us that others shattered. What's beautiful about it is that we are there for each other ... even just as someone who are more than friends but not fully lovers.

I have come to accept your flaws and the fact that you can be quite distracted. You have accepted that I can be petulant and immature, sometimes even insecure. If we continue this, I think in the end, we may actually come to love the broken parts of us and I think that is a beautiful thing.

make up and lighting

Today, I decided to take a photo of myself in front of the make up case with lights from AVON. I thought that I did a pretty good look using some basic items and I wanted to see how it would turn out on camera. This is the result.

The reaction of my friends and followers are nothing short of amazing. On Facebook, this photos has gotten almost 200 likes and on Instagram, more than 10 comments already. My profile photos on Facebook get an average of 50 likes so getting almost 200 is DAEBAK! The comments on Instagram have all been positive as well. It's just mindboggling how simple make up with the right lighting can do wonders.

For this look, I used Etude for my brows in honey brown which made my features softer. My on fleek eyeliner was from Avon and I love that it was so easy to put on. I literally just drew it on my eyes. My eyeshadow was from Naked which is composed of basic colors to highlight my eyes but not draw too much attention since I already had fierce down pat from the eyeliner. The blush I used is from Maybelline and I love how it made my cheeks look more defined. Lastly, the lipstick I used was from the Kylie Line shade of CANDY-K.

I had a few blemishes so I used the Dream Velvet Matte in Sandy Beige to cover it up a little bit but I did not put it all over my face. I just made sure that I looked flawless and I think I did. What do you think?

Wonders of Palawan

Palawan.

Everyone has heard or read of the beauty that is Palawan but nothing prepares you for it when you actually lay your eyes on it's islands. Initially, I really wasn't into going there save for the fact that it was another place to visit but the excitement wasn't there. Maybe it was the fact that I was dead tired of the many things happening in my life when this trip happened but I was just meh about it.

Crazy right?

So I went there a day after my sister and Mom flew in and I was by myself at the airport wondering why people even go to the airport really early when they could check in at a nearby hotel and sleep comfortably. Eventually I found a spot and forced myself to be a cat and just sleep in any way or form.

Side note: NAIA Terminal 4 needs to start thinking about the passengers. It is one of the smallest and most uncomfortable terminals I have ever seen. Absolutely no thought about the comfort of the passenger was given.

Finally, after an uneventful check in and flight which I slept through, we landed in Palawan. First thought that came to my head was, "oh! It's like Batanes; small and beautiful."

Shades: Komono / Scarf: H&M
I was very happy to see the service from Coron Ecolodge promptly waiting for me to take me to my hotel. Remember that during this trip, I was running on more than 30 hours of being awake. All I really wanted to do was sleep. I knew I was in Palawan but I had to sleep first so I can truly enjoy the place.

Upon arriving, they gave us welcome drinks which I welcomed with open arms. I was also quite impressed that they knew who I was. Seems the front desk does her job well and researched on the incoming guest which I took as a good thing. My Mom and sister were getting ready for their island hopping and I finally got to sleep. Upon waking up at around 3pm, I felt hungry and decided to roam around. It seems Coron is a tiny place and you could simply walk around and not get lost because it all circles around. However, being the wuss that I am, I took a tricycle.

Sidenote: Their tricycles do not look like the ones in Cebu or in Manila. I guess each province has a way of personalizing their own tricyles.

The next day, we finally went beach hopping and all I can say is that it is not an overstatement that Palawan is one of the most beautiful places you will ever see. Batanes is to land as Palawan is to sea when it comes to AMAZING and BREATHTAKING VIEW.

My Mom, sister, and I had fun exploring thanks to our trusty tour guide, Harold who took good care of us the whole time. He even got me to snorkel in the deep waters which I have only done once in my life and with my brothers who I trust with my life.

I was only able to stay for roughly 2 days in Palawan but I know that I will definitely go back to explore more of it's beauty. It's actually not pricey and the people are very friendly. You also get to stay connected in most areas so you can still stay connected to the outside world while reveling in the beauty and serenity of the place. Best of both worlds I gotta say so make sure you visit this gem hidden away in the Philippines.

Why do you have a Starbucks Planner?

This was a question often posted to me when I post my yearly photos with my newly acquired Starbucks planner. Those who do not know me think that I am just joining the hype and making the planner a status symbol while those who do know me, know that I have been collecting these Starbucks planners since it started way back in 2003. I know this because it was my first year of becoming addicted to Starbucks since I was working for a call center.

I have a planner because I have plans in life, thoughts to write down, and memories to preserve.

The Starbucks planner has seen me through so many ups and downs. It has seen me meet so many interesting people because I would always ask the person in front of me if he or she was getting his sticker and if not, then I'd introduce myself and ask for it. Sometimes, when I have too many stickers, I have also given it to someone who needs it more.

The Starbucks planner is not just another planner to me. It is tradition. I give the 2nd planner I get to my little brother who uses it religiously and I give the rest to friends who may not be coffee drinkers but wants to have it. I give out the ones I get but do not have anyone to give to anymore to random strangers. It also becomes a reason to induce mandatory get together so that you can meet friends and get their stickers for your planner. Hitting two birds with one stone is what I always say while my friends grumble wholeheartedly.

Sticker collecting can be a happy moment for a lot of people. Families and friends can help each other out which is what I initially forced the people around me to do but has now become a tradition. I'm glad that there is one other thing that I can look forward to during the Christmas season and it is completing the stickers on my Starbucks card.
