on school shootings ...

Someone recently tagged me in a raw footage of the last moments of the Columbine massacre. The person who did said it's because I love reading about serial killers and it was something that would interest me. This was true but I still had to report the person who posted the video simply because I could not imagine the pain of the victim's and the perpetrator's families when they see the video and relive the last moments of their love one's life.

IT IS WRONG.

Many people have played the blame game when it comes to these situations but at the end of the day, when all fingers have been pointed, hurtful words have been spoken, there is only one fact that remains.

DAMAGE DONE.

They have killed. They have killed themselves. They have gone through hell and back. They will never be alive again. There are wounds that won't heal. There are situations that will never be forgiven ever again.

WHO IS TO BLAME?

Everyone. As a parent myself, sadly, it will still initially fall on the parent of the shooters for not noticing that there is something wrong with their child. Parents have the biggest responsibility of ensuring that their kids grow up right and when parents fail at this, the finger will always be pointed at them no matter how hard they tried.

Next is the system. These kids were bullied and perhaps, if the system just paid more attention and addressed it, it wouldn't have happened. Then there's the bystanders. The ones who have seen the signs and chose to ignore it. The media plays a part but again, this is all the chicken and egg scenario. If media didn't play things out and if parents and the system paid more attention and round and round it goes.

Lastly, the perpetrators. They may have been victims themselves but they chose to victimize others and taking away the life of others because you are mad at the world is still not right. It will never be right.

At the end of the day, we are all to blame. At one point, we have been the bullies, the victims, the bystanders, the system, and the perpetrator. Always remember that your actions or inaction has a butterfly effect and we never know when we become the trigger for someone else's madness.

  2. On psychological way I'm so interested what's going on on these peoples minds who are doing things like these. Or murderers on the other hand, what makes them to kill other people. I've never quite understood that - it's something that goes way over my head every time I try to wrap my head around it.
We have had two school massacres here in Finland, Jokela & Kauhajoki.
I believe that if you want to make a statement, do something else than kill bunch of innocent people. I've never understood how killing innocent people will help you fight for your own twisted thoughts you've got inside of your head.
Or if killing is the option, then they should start from theirselves.

  4. I am in total agreement with you. I think everyone involved is a victim, including the shooters. What they did was wrong, but we don't know if that was the only way they felt they could have retaliated against being bullied, if they were bullied. Sometimes people don't know the full story and motive behind these crimes but regardless, it's a sad event and we should learn from it.

  9. I have such a hard time even watching the news anymore. I am tired and broken and just can't hear or watch any more of the carnage. We seem bent on destroying ourselves sometimes.

  14. I completely agree with you but I have to say that sometimes it's easy to blame the parents. I'm french and during the terrorists attacks, one of the monsters lived like a double life, parents had no idea. At home, he was the best son you can imagine and outside.....One thing is sure the parents are devasted and will always think we should have seen but if he's that good to hide...what are they supposed to do?
( I really want to read your opinion about that)

    1. You know how people always say, "he seemed so perfect?" but this always comes with "there was an instance that he was this or that" or "there was something off about him but he's a really nice guy so we ignored it" or the old adage "too good to be true."

As parents, we are the ones who should know our child the best. It's not easy. It is very hard but it is also part of our responsibility as parents. I'm sure they did their best but there is just no way out on this one. Parents will always be part of the blame for the very simple reason that they are the parent.

    2. I completely agree with you, people will always blame the parents as they are the parents and they raised these monsters. And if they have feelings, they will blame themselves!

  15. I'd have not wanted to see that video either. And we do all have our roles, in everything, you're right.

  16. I imagine anyone who has spent time with the perpetrators can't help but to feel some sort of guilt. Perhaps they missed something or ignored something. It's not their fault it happened, of course, but I imagine it would be difficult.

  17. It's simply heartbreaking but I agree with you. It always starts at home, and as parents it's our responsibility to check on our kids or have them checked if we have to.
