Back at the Gym After 7 Years

It has been seven years since I last stepped foot inside a gym. The last time I was at one, it was with Yawyan Alasan and it involved hard-core training that would last two hours per session. I  loved it though and I thrived in it. 

However, things happened and I could no longer make time to attend my Yawyan sessions. Fast forward to now and I have gained over 100lbs much to the chagrin of my family and friends. After much prompting from friends who were seriously worried about my health, one of my best friends finally convinced me to go with her to the gym. 


I was apprehensive if I were to be honest. It has been years. I am extremely heavy now. I know that I need this but at the same time, I didn't know if I could still do it. 

SEVEN YEARS. I have not moved that much in the last 7 years, especially during the pandemic. I barely reach 1,000 steps daily since I work from home and am glued to my desk. 

Thankfully, K dragged me and even paid for this session just to get me to go back. 


See that smile? I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Ignorance is bliss indeed. What I loved about this gym session was the coach who did not try to push too hard. He respected that it had been a long time since I did this. I felt at ease. 

We did a few reps of things I used to do and initially, I thought, "Hey, this is easy." However, I realized hours later that nothing I did was easy because I now felt muscles I didn't know I still had. 






I decided to document my journey to becoming healthier. I know that it will be hard. I have so many things that I need to unlearn and be more disciplined about.

I need to cut down on my sweet drinks.
I need to cut down on my rice. 
I need to cut down on my binge snacks in the middle of the night. 
I need to move more, a lot more.  

I am realistic about this though. It will take me at least 2 years to hit my goal of losing the 100 that I have gained. 5lbs a month sounds easier and working out three times a week feels doable. 


Slowly but surely. In 2 years, I hope this photo above will be the before to a healthier, after photo.
