Online Etiquette in the New Normal: How Brands Should Behave on Social Media this 2022

Just like in the physical world, the digital world, primarily social media, has rules. The only difference is that a lot of it remains unwritten in the latter, especially when it comes to behavior and how you interact online.

This makes navigating online platforms more complex and unpredictable. What may be acceptable now, may not be in a year, a month, or even just a few weeks or days. That's how volatile social networking communities can be!

With that said, it's important that you stay vigilant and updated on social media etiquette trends. This way, you do not endanger your brand's reputation in any way or attract the ire of netizens.

It's also advisable to seek the help of social media management agencies in the Philippines, particularly if your brand is just starting to venture digitally. After all, they know the ins and outs of these social media platforms and could predict what behavioral trends may occur.

However, if you want to get hands-on with your online business' socials, here are some of the things you can do to stay uncancelled online:

Know Your Platform

If you're planning to expand your business online, the first thing you need to do is familiarize yourself with different social media platforms. This way, you'll know what social networking site will work or be the most appropriate for your brand.

It'll also help you out when it comes to your audience. Different social platforms target different kinds of people. Young, old, students, professionals, teens - there are sites for each.

Last but not least, knowing the nature and specifics of your chosen platform will allow you to grasp what type of content to post, especially if it's suitable or not.

Be Updated on Current Issues

With more people using social media in the past two years, being informed about current issues will do you a lot of good. After all, more eyes are present to scrutinize what you say or what you do online as a brand. One wrong move or post can lead to being 'boycotted' or 'canceled.'

Learning about the current state of the world, the country, or the place you're in will help you in saying the right things and prevent uninformed decisions.

Don't React Hastily

When it comes to business, it pays to be patient and understanding. However, this does not only apply to physical life but more so for brands diversifying online. As we all know, the internet is a free place - some would even say "too free." And this means that people don't have much filter on what they say, especially when it comes to product reviews and services.

A lot of times, you'll encounter this below-the-belt behavior but you have to keep in mind to always be professional when addressing such interactions. This is important to remember because you're not only representing your person but your brand itself, your livelihood.

As such, you should always be patient and respectful towards consumers and potential customers - whatever they throw at you.

Give Credit Where Credit is Due

The internet is one big public forum. It makes it possible for people - regardless of where they are in the world - to post what they know or feel about specific topics. However, there's a downside to this. Just as we're free to publish, people are also free to take what's yours and plaster their name all over it.

Celebrities, influencers, and media personalities have been canceled or boycotted for this kind of behavior - and online brands are no exception. That's why you should be vigilant in the content you publish and share.

Make it a habit to create content that's original and authentic. And if you're sharing content created by other users, always credit them. Meanwhile, if you're material is based on information gathered by another individual, make sure to attribute them properly. This applies to user-generated content, too (UGC).

Pay Extra Attention to Your Grammar and Spelling

To be recognized as a trustworthy, professional, and legitimate online brand, you need to polish every aspect of your digital presence. And of course, this includes the content you're releasing, particularly the written parts.

Make sure that your message is coming across as intended and that there are no hiccups along the way, specifically grammatical and spelling errors. The presence of these mistakes could make you appear sloppy and amateurish. It'll also brand you as unreliable, which could cost you your following, potential customers, and existing patrons.

Be Careful of Your Humor

While humor has always been an effective way to market yourself and your products, it should be used appropriately and sparingly. Be more strategic with your humor and use it only when necessary or suitable. Remember that comic-timing is a thing.

On top of that, you also need to make sure that your humor isn't offensive, especially now that the online community has become more aware and people are clamoring for accountability.

Always Fact Check

In this age where fake news is spreading like wildfire, we must remain watchful of the things we post and share. Because if we don't, we're going to be labeled as a spreader of fabricated and inaccurate information.

Online brands should put more effort into this as their platform allows them more reach. The more reach you have, the greater the backlash you'll have to deal with. And this will not only impact your brand image but will also cause people to turn their backs on your products and services.

A Reminder

Although these tips will - no doubt - help you navigate social media, it's not the end-all or be-all. As we mentioned earlier, the social media space is volatile, and what might be acceptable now may not be as the year progresses.

For that reason, you should definitely take the time to stay in touch with trends, specifically when it comes to online behavior. Because if not, it might spell the end of your online brand.
