Next to Normal

I watched this show, prepared to be impressed and blown away but what I did not expect was the amount of tears I would shed at this play. I literally had tears falling down my face at certain parts of the musical and I could feel what the characters were feeling.

I was the Mom longing for her son ... I was the daughter, wanting to be noticed ... I was the husband, loving and not knowing if I would be loved again ... I was the son, wanting to be real but could never be.

There was a line in the play that went like this.
I don't want normal coz normal is too far away. I just want something next to normal.
I want someone to be there for me. I want something that is next to normal. because normal is not something that exists in my world. I'm bipolar and the guy has to accept that about me and have infinite patience.

I am the one who knows you
I am the one who cares
I am the one who's always been there
I am the one who's helped you
And if you think that I just don't give a damn
Then you just don't know who I am

I chanced upon a co-dancer. It seems we also share a love for musicals. Here's to us and for something that is next to normal.

  1. Wow, Kay, it's awesome to watch musical. The last time I saw one was when I was in college and that was in UP Tanghalang Abelardo. I could have watched "Miss Saigon" in its Manila run kaya lang naubusan kami ng ticket that time..lol..funny.

  3. Oh, good for you. I thought you cried a river..lol..just kidding.

But, seriously, musical is fun. Aside from the fact that it's way too different in movies since it's a live act and actors cannot afford mistakes. Or at least they have this great ability to hide it for people not to obviously noticed.

    1. It really hits you where it hurts ... you can relate to what they talk about and it tugs at the heart strings.

  8. Reading the line from the play you posted here has also touched my feeling of sympathy, a feeling of compassion. Just a mere understanding of what he/she really is in reality or for his/her upbringing is all it takes to make him/her feel a real he/she!

  9. Panalo yung title - Next to Normal. Parang kahapon lang ganitong-ganito ako, I feel weird at di ko maintindihan kung bakit and now I've read this. Hmm, pwede ko rin pala sabihin I'd rather want to live a next to normal life, hehe.

  11. Can I go with you, too! Haven't seen musical plays for some time now. It was just a normal thing to watch plays in CCP and UP when I was in college until the time I was in the university. But things changed when I started raising kids and taking care of them. I wish I can bring them along when they get older so they can learn to appreciate other forms of art.

  16. I have first heard about Next to Normal for Neil Patrick Harris via twitter. He was so impressed about it. I didn't know Next to Normal was already shown in the Philippines. I have a friend who loves musicals and she even goes to different places to watch them.
